🌊 Mohawk River and Barge Canal
The Mohawk River and Barge Canal are popular options for anglers looking for variety. Fish commonly found here include smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, northern pike, tiger muskellunge, yellow perch, black crappie, pumpkinseed, bluegill, rock bass, brown bullhead, channel catfish, and common carp.
Because the Mohawk is such a large waterway, different areas can fish differently. Bass are often found near rocks, walls, and current breaks, while catfish and carp may be found in slower or deeper sections.
🛶 Great Sacandaga Lake
Great Sacandaga Lake is one of the area's best-known fishing destinations. Anglers may catch smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye, brown trout, rainbow trout, yellow perch, black crappie, channel catfish, brown bullhead, redbreast sunfish, rock bass, pumpkinseed, and common carp. NYSDEC also notes that very large northern pike can still be found there and that the lake has had strong smallmouth bass fishing in recent years.

Thompsons Lake is a popular Capital Region spot for panfish and trout. It is stocked each spring with rainbow trout and brown trout, making it a good option for anglers who want a calmer lake setting without traveling too far. Panfish can also make this a practical choice for families or newer anglers.
🎣 Basic Creek Reservoir — Albany County
Basic Creek Reservoir is known as a shore-fishing destination. Fish found there include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, chain pickerel, walleye, black crappie, yellow perch, pumpkinseed, bluegill, brown bullhead, yellow bullhead, white sucker, golden shiner, common shiner, and American eel. For casual anglers, the main catches are often largemouth bass and panfish.
🌅 Saratoga Lake — Saratoga County
Saratoga Lake offers a strong mix of warmwater fish. Anglers may catch largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, brown bullhead, northern pike, walleye, black crappie, bluegill, chain pickerel, pumpkinseed, redbreast sunfish, and rock bass. NYSDEC suggests fishing weed-bed edges for northern pike and rocky shores for smallmouth bass and walleye.
🌿 Lake Taghkanic — Columbia County
Lake Taghkanic is another good summer fishing option, especially for families. Fish found there include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, black crappie, bluegill, pumpkinseed, rock bass, redbreast sunfish, yellow perch, white perch, brown bullhead, American eel, alewife, golden shiner, creek chub, banded killifish, and tessellated darter. The lake has a decent panfish population, and NYSDEC notes reports of large bass and chain pickerel.

Summer fishing is often best early in the morning or later in the evening. During the middle of the day, bright sun ☀️ and warmer water can push fish into deeper, cooler areas or make them less active. You can still catch fish at noon, but your odds are usually better when the sun is lower and the water is cooler.
Early morning is a favorite time for many anglers. Fish are often more active, boat traffic is lighter, and the weather is more comfortable. Evening can be just as good, especially around sunset when insects are active and fish often move closer to shore to feed.
Cloudy days ☁️ can also be productive. A little cloud cover can make fish less cautious and more willing to bite. After a light rain 🌦️, fishing can sometimes improve, especially in rivers and streams, but always use common sense around fast-moving water, slippery banks, and storms.
