Lake George Lost Its Big Winter Attractions. What's Left Is the Calendar Locals Run Themselves

"It would just be too much of a gamble," Tom Lloyd told the Times Union last December. He was explaining why Winter's Dream, the $3 million light show staged at Fort William Henry, would not return to Lake George.

That decision ended an experiment. Over two winters starting in late 2023, the village tried to fill its quiet months with multi-month, large-scale attractions built or brought in from outside. None of them lasted. What remains for the 2026–27 season are two events that have been going for decades and are run by people from the community: a single evening in late November and five weekends at Shepard Park in February and March.

Three Attractions, Each Gone After a Season or Two

The sequence started with the Ice Castles exhibit. After a winter with temperatures in the high 40s pushed its opening back to February, Ice Castles rebranded its Lake George attraction as "Winter Realms" for 2023–24. The walk-through ice castle became a skating rink surrounded by lighting installations and ice sculptures that could handle warmer weather. Ice Castles now lists New Hampshire and Montréal as its winter locations.

Attraction Where it ran How long it lasted

Lights at the Lake Shepard Park, Charles R. Wood Park and other village sites One season, starting November 30, 2024

Winter's Dream was the most ambitious of the three. According to the Times Union's account, Warren County gave the Warren County Winter Coalition $3 million in occupancy tax funds in August 2023 to stage a yearly winter attraction. The plan was for the county to recover part of that money from the profits. The coalition hired Moment Factory, a Montreal entertainment company. The fort's cannons were temporarily removed, its four bastions were reinforced and a cabin was built on site for interactive games.

Then the weather turned against it. Sam Luciano, president of the Fort William Henry Corporation, told county supervisors that it rained on 16 of the 21 days the show was open. The show sold about 28,000 tickets in total and averaged 270 a night in January. A little over $2.9 million was spent, and the remaining $70,000 went back to the county. Much of the equipment was rented, so a second season would have meant paying for it all over again.

Lights at the Lake was the low-cost version: a free walk-through display open Thursday through Sunday evenings from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. It opened alongside Lite Up the Village on November 30, 2024, and ran through that winter. It did not run in 2025–26.

The Coalition Pointed Back to Weekend Events

When the Times Union asked what came next, the coalition did not propose another long-running show. Lloyd said he was considering more short-term events, naming the annual Lake George Winter Carnival. Luciano mentioned how popular ice bars have been, and Warren County Tourism Director Heather Bagshaw said the county was looking at projects like the ones underway at Gore Mountain to bring in skiers and snowboarders.

That puts this winter's calendar in a different light. The events with fixed dates for 2026–27 are the same village and volunteer events that kept going through all three of those experiments. Neither needs a three-month run of good weather. Each one only needs a single good evening or a string of weekends.

Saturday, November 28: The 28th Lite Up the Village

Lite Up the Village is on Saturday, November 28, 2026, along Canada Street and Beach Road, with gathering spots at Shepard Park and the Festival Commons. It is free. The 2026 schedule is final:

  1. 3:00 p.m. The afternoon starts with live music, carriage rides, firepits with food and walking tours with carolers along Canada Street.
  2. 6:25 p.m. More than 7,000 holiday lights switch on together across Canada Street, Beach Road, Shepard Park and the Festival Commons.
  3. 6:30 p.m. Fireworks go up over the lakefront.
  4. 6:40 p.m. The Parade of Holiday Lights, with illuminated fire trucks and decorated floats, heads down Canada Street and ends at the Lake George Volunteer Fire House.

Questions about the event go to the contact listed through the fire department at (518) 232-0700. In 2024, Lights at the Lake opened on this same night and then stayed open four evenings a week for the rest of the winter. Lite Up packs the whole season opening into about three and a half hours, and this is its 28th year.

The Fort William Henry Hotel is hosting Breakfast with Santa that same morning, November 28, and again on December 5, 12 and 19, from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m. If you have young kids, you can make a full day of it, with breakfast before the village fills up and the lights coming on after dark.

February 6 to March 7: The 65th Winter Carnival

The Lake George Winter Carnival began in 1961 and is run entirely by volunteers. The 65th carnival runs on weekends from February 6 through March 7, 2027, at Shepard Park in Lake George Village. It is the event Lloyd named in December as a model, and it has been going since well before Ice Castles first came to town.

The carnival's cook-off page gives each weekend its own dish, and the 2027 contest starts February 6:

  • Week 1: Chili, starting at 1 p.m.
  • Week 2: BBQ
  • Week 3: Chowder
  • Week 4: Chicken wings
  • Week 5: Mac and cheese

Visitors buy tickets to taste the entries and vote for the winner, and the carnival's daily schedule lists each weekend's theme, start time and judging rules. The 2026 carnival also had outhouse races on its first and third weekends and a polar plunge every Saturday and Sunday. Those are the events most people picture when they think of the carnival, though the 2027 day-by-day schedule will show the final lineup.

The carnival year starts eight days earlier. Its annual fundraising gala is set for Friday, January 29, 2027.

The two events are built differently. Winter's Dream was a large production with a professional studio behind it and a run that stretched from late 2023 into late winter 2024. The carnival has run 64 times on volunteer labor and local cooks, a few days a week, over five weekends. A rainy Saturday costs it one day of events. It does not put the whole season at risk.

What Changes on the Street Between Event Dates

The off-season also means changes to a few local spots. Bolton Landing Brewing Company, at 4933 Lake Shore Drive in Bolton Landing, is normally listed as a year-round business. It posted that it would close for construction and renovations beginning October 11, 2026. If it is your usual winter stop, check the brewery's own channels before you drive up Route 9N.

In the village, Caffè Vero's new address is 35 Montcalm Street, in the building that used to house the Lake George Hardware Store. That puts it a short walk from Shepard Park, where both the lights and the carnival will be this winter.

At Team Taylor, we follow the Lake George calendar because it shapes what living here is like in every season, not only the summer one. If you're thinking about selling in the spring and want to know how winter in the village affects timing, photography and showings, Team Taylor can walk you through it over coffee after Lite Up the Village. Request a Free Home Valuation, and we'll start with what your Lake George home is worth before the carnival wraps up on March 7.
